The Valar - Tolkien Artwork by whittingtonrhett The Valar - Tolkien Artwork by whittingtonrhett
This is my biggest acheivement art-wise...this took me months to plan and draw and complete. after having read the Silmarillion several times, I originially decided to do a poster on "The Children of Hurin", but the more I thought about it, I wanted to do a poster of the Valar. I have never seen any satisfactory renditions of the Valar in person or on the net, so I decided to draw up what I had in my head when I read it...this may perhaps look comic book-ish, but hey, thats What I was kinda going for. I know so many people that like LOTR but have never read the Silmarillion, and they are floored when I mention that Tolkien had "Gods" of Middle Earth, so hopefully this poster can help them get a visual and understand the Hierarchy therein...we'll see...sound off and let me know what you guys think...

Just throwing this out there out of Curiosity, but can anyone Name or Guess the Scenes or Characters depicted on The Tapestries of Vaire in the Center of the Poster?  (they are actually all pictures from my old Hand drawn posters from different stories and Eras of Middle Earth.  just curious to see if anyone can guess all of them.  there are a couple that may be difficult. ;)

This is epic! I love your Manwe, Mandos and Lorien (the two of them really do look like bros), and that is the most unique Varda I've ever seen and I love her! Orome is awesome. And I think it's so cute that you even tucked in the Cottage of Lost Play at the bottom... that was a surprise touch for me!

Longtime Silmarillion aficionado here (first read it in 1977), and I love your interpretation of the Valar here in the style of great, classic comic books.  I'm amenable to any number of interpretations of Tolkien's legendarium, whether through art or writing, but I am particularly drawn to those artists who march to the beat of a different drummer rather than being derivative.  Your work is distinctive and refreshing!

Thank you!  I conisider this to be my biggest and best piece of artwork that I have done.  not too many people seem to know about the Silmarillion or the Valar, so its awesome to see that people actually recognize these characters and to get feedback ! thanks very much!  :)

You know, seeing this made me wonder. Have you ever read the Dragonlance series? If you haven't I am pretty sure you'd enjoy them.

Interesting...lol I guess that comes from my comic book style of art...alThough interestingly enough have always been a bigger DC fan than Marvel, so I am less Familiar with the looks of those characters...one thing that was difficult for me with this work was finding the balance between comic book style and detailed fantasy art. But thanks for the comment! It's food for thought :)

Actually I'm not a fan of comics and Marvel and so on, so I may be wrong, but that was the impression)
Well, if it was a part of the plan than it's a success)

This is stunning!
Your depiction of Orome is one of the best I've ever seen!
Its also a neat toucht that Mandos has a scythe!
I also like have you have your other 'tapestries' around Vaire!

GOD bless
